We’ve watched a lot of surfing movies. (Step Into Liquid is one of our favorite yoga films.) This video, Dark Side of the Lens is shot through with visceral elements. Its poetic vitality registers the dark force of the ocean with a love equal to that of the bright flash of sky against the cliffs and the racing colors of the sun. The saturation of blues and greens alone will wake up the sea in you.
“My Ma always encouraged us to open our eyes and our hearts to the world and make up our own minds through experience,” says director Mickey Smith. In spite of the intense hypothermic cold of the water, he is committed to his dream. “I want to see wave riding documented the way I see it in my head and the way I feel it in the sea. It’s a strange set of skills to acquire and it’s only achievable through time spent riding waves.”
His work, says Smith, “whispers possibilities and conjures situations I thrive among…
I never want to take this for granted so I try to keep my motivations simple, real, positive.”
Sounds like yoga to us.
