The Real Life is Real Yoga Practices Index
My favorite thing about having a plan is planning on deviating from the plan.
BY THE MAGAZINE OF YOGA STAFF
We met Jonathan Caplan in the check out line at Whole Foods while we were breaking down the cover of an unattractive magazine. (Focus!) Jonathan is a graphic designer in New York, who first slid his eyes and then his charming attention to our project. He agreed, that cover was an ugly baby, and he could explain why.
Fortunately for Jonathan’s clients, ugly babies will never happen to them.

The Magazine of Yoga 3×5 Interview
What is the task you like to do best in your work?
Make people smile. I like having the freedom to employ wit.
Specifically, I like working with fonts—typography. Letter forms, words, and sentences are like pieces of a collage. It’s exciting to watch the finished composition happen piece by piece.
What housework or domestic detail is most satisfying to do?
Cooking. Does something categorize as housework if you find it satisfying?
What in light of your experience in life, should we not waste time on or worry about?
People talking behind your back.
How do you celebrate?
How do you learn?
Listening, walking, taking pictures, blogs… Generally leaving the door open for exploration.
How do you prepare to do something?
I surround myself with people and resources that know more than me.
Do you have a nemesis?
Do you have a vocation?
I have two vocations. One pays the bills. One happens sometimes when I’m not paying the bills.
Do you have a plan?
No. I wasn’t planning on answering these questions today… and LOOK how much fun we’re having! My favorite thing about having a plan is planning on deviating from the plan. This drives my wife crazy.
New York magazine
Growing up my parents subscribed to Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, and Car & Driver. The first three fostered my love for pop culture. It became “the news” to me.
Looking back, those magazines helped guide me to the art department of Interview magazine. My first job in New York City.
Favorite work beverage?
Coffee (black) in the morning, Perrier at the studio, Oban 14 after hours.
Favorite relax thing?
Sunday morning couch, paper, and coffee with my wife.
