What Motivates Us?
The enchanting and confounding truths of why we try
BY THE MAGAZINE OF YOGA STAFF
When he describes what makes us tick, Dan Pink’s witty style is crackling smart talk, the rare superbly entertaining kind that makes you want to sit next to him at dinner. He says we have a natural power to accomplish what we set our sights on that helps us go big when nothing else will.
Neither punishment nor reward
Pink reports on research done around the world that demonstrates over and over again, the carrot-and-stick approach – even when it involves large sums of cash – doesn’t motivate us or help us succeed. In fact, too much cash appears to practically guarantee failure!
Deep in our nature, Pink says, we’re driven to our best performance and greatest satisfaction by the pleasure we get from learning and from sharing what we know. Making a contribution is meaningful to us, and we’ll willingly work for it.
Presented by those creative geniuses at RSAnimate, Pink’s fascinating research from his book Drive makes PowerPoint look sooo 20th century!
